Cell viability in QGel™ MT 3D Matrices is very high. For example, it was shown that viability of human foreskin fibroblasts (hFFs) was around 90-95% 16 hours after encapsulation (Raeber et al., Biophysical Journal 2005). Figure 1 below shows a live/dead assay after 8 days encapsulation of hFFs. These cells were seen to form 3D cellular networks within the gels after several weeks of culture, demonstrating potentiality for long term cell culture. However, note that cell viability rate in 3D gels depends on the cell type used.
